Haphazard Marketing: Self-publishing authors

Confession: I have no idea how to market a self-published book. Absolutely none. Every time I try to research the idea, my eyes glaze over after a few excruciating sentences and my mind wanders to pirate ships, mysterious forests, or the Wild West.

I'd rather kiss this goat again
Shockingly, I actually did well in school.

My plan right now is to get 100 first copies printed of my book, go to local bookstores, and try to convince the owner to carry a few copies of my book. Maybe (gulp) try to convince someone to let me do a book signing.

The very idea makes my right eye twitch.

There’s got to be a better way, right? Please, my self-publishing compadres, help a sister out! How do you market your book?

  1. If you can find the right small book store owner at the right small book store, then getting them to let you have a signing should be no problem. Make sure to bring plenty of books. I have a "PR Person" (my mom, lol) who does a lot of "the talking" for me, so if you have a bolder family member I highly recommend taking them with you.

Admittedly, I got my books kickstarted by selling copies at the lunch table (I had a custom lunchbox with my children's characters hand painted on it) at my day job. My theory: Try everything! If it doesn't work, move on.

Also, outgoing people make better PR people, lol. You have a great blog, by the way!

    1. Thank you! I can definitely be bold when necessary (I'm a police officer), but selling something I created seems nerve wracking. I appreciate your input, both on my marketing strategy and my blog!
